CURRENT ARTIST IN RESIDENCE

Sonja Henderson, an aborigine American artist, is originally from McSherrystown, Pennsylvania and now dwells and works in Chicago. Sonja received her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in painting and drawing. She concentrated on the figure and still uses the body as a way to express cultural identity and storytelling. Sonja received her MFA from the University of California–Berkeley where she concentrated in sculpture and installation. While at Berkeley, Sonja created life-size earthworks and temporal structures that spoke to space, place, and cultural politics. These natural structures made of clay, earth, twigs, and stones eventually melted into the landscape addressing cycles, sustainability, and "letting go." Sonja creates public and private installations that challenge people’s perceptions of the world and society. Sonja recently completed the first monument in Chicago/Illinois devoted to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Fair Housing marches.
